Frequently asked questions for teachers thinking about applying to be a master tutor

There are a lot of things that make Mighty Scholar stand apart, from our respect for teachers to our mission of advancing equity in education. That’s why over 20% of our students get their tutoring on scholarship. And we also are built on a subscription based model, so teachers and students get to know each other and learn better together. Perhaps most of all, Mighty Scholar is unique because every master tutor is a certified teacher with a Master’s degree.

The Mighty Scholar platform is scheduled to launch in late August 2020.

Yes, all master tutors for Mighty Scholar are required to have a master’s degree in education or a content-related area of study.

Yes, every Mighty Scholar master tutor is required to have a valid state teaching certification.

You can apply to be a tutor by completing the application on the master tutor application page. Please remember, every Mighty Scholar master tutor must have a state education certification and Master’s degree.

No. Unlike a lot of other platforms, that’s part of what we do. We do the sales and marketing, your job is to be a great teacher. However, if you do refer students, you will be eligible for a referral bonus.

Master tutors get paid by the tutoring session, and the rate includes a premium for responding to messages from your students throughout the month in their virtual classroom. We believe in paying great teachers for great work, so the rate is benchmarked to over $120,000 a year for full time work. You’ll be an independent contractor, and you’ll never have to send an invoice because you will automatically get paid by direct deposit by the 15th of every month for the previous months work. 

Once you become a master tutor, you will be asked how many students and sessions per week you would like to have. We will do our best to fill your schedule. We handle the marketing of the business, unlike many other platforms where you are expected to sign up your own students.

Yes, the goal is to build relationships over time, and you should expect to continue to work with the same students week to week. That said, if a particular match is not right, we will work to fix it.

Every student will have a tutoring schedule that meets either one, two or three times per week. Each session is 30 minutes.

You make your own schedule. Generally speaking, tutoring hours are from 7am to 10pm in the local time of the student. The majority of students request tutoring from 4-10pm.

Messaging is a big part of Mighty Scholar. In addition to your weekly sessions, students are able to message their tutors in a virtual classroom any time. As master tutors, you are expected to respond to your messages within 24 hours, so we expect that you will check your messages at least once a day. You are paid for this time as part of the monthly rate per student you teach, in addition to your compensation for live sessions.

Scheduling sessions is easy. The student can schedule a session with you during your available times in the platform. You set your available hours each day, and you can sync your schedule with your Google Calendar if you wish to avoid conflicts with any other engagements.

Requesting new students is easy. There is a button in the tutor dashboard to request more students, where you can specify how many extra sessions per week you want to add to your schedule.

If you need to lessen your workload, it’s no problem. In your tutor dashboard, you can send a message that indicates how many fewer sessions you need to hold each week, and we will work with you personally to get each student transferred to another master tutor.

Theoretically yes, why not. Just remember doing so would require a lot of night and weekend hours.

This is easy. You can either mark time off in your tutor dashboard or, if you sync your Google calendar, mark your vacation time as busy. If your students will need a substitute tutor during your time off, you can request a substitute in your tutor dashboard.

We believe in great pay for great teachers, so our compensation rates are benchmarked to a $125,000 a year salary for a full time job.

Yes! You should expect to work with the Mighty Scholar team 1 or 2 times per month to check in our your progress, and you will be invited to attend at least one professional development session every month. You will be paid for this time in addition to your normal tutoring compensation.
